Definition:

A mobile operating system (OS) is software that allows smartphones, tablet PCs and other devices to run applications and program. A mobile OS is responsible for identifying and defining mobile device features and functions, including keypads, application synchronization, email, thumbwheel and text messaging. Following are different types of operating systems.

Open Source Platforms:

An operating system that is based on open source software is one that is generally free for anyone. Linux is one of the most popular open source systems and it is used in a number of mobile settings. Most of Android is free and open source. Symbian is another example. Nokia phones make wide use of Symbian technology,

Proprietary Platforms:

Proprietary operating systems are designed, developed and marketed by a company. BlackBerry, Apple, and Microsoft are widely regarded in this case.

Windows Mobile:

It is the Mobile operating system developed by Microsoft. Windows Phone comes with a mobile-optimized version of the Internet Explorer for accessing the web, and Exchange, which supports secure corporate e-mail accounts with push support.

IOS:

It is the Apple’s mobile operating system The Apple iOS multi-touch, multi-tasking operating system is what runs the Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The Apple iOS is not allowed to be used in third party systems, so you will only be able to use it on products made by Apple. It comes with the Safari web browser for internet use, an iPod application for playing music and Apple’s Mail for managing your missives

Android:

It is Google’s free, open-source cellphone operating system which allows developers to access unlocked hardware and develop new programs as they wish. Android is currently the fastest growing smartphone operating system in the market.

Symbian:

It is the Nokia’s Cell Phone operating system which is mainly used on mid to low-end handsets Symbian’s strength is in bringing smartphone functionality – including e-mail, apps and multitasking
