Peringatan Maulid Nabi SAW mendorong orang untuk membaca shalawat, dan shalawat itu diperintahkan oleh Allah Ta’ala, Allah SWT berfirman: إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيماً "Sesungguhnya Allah dan para malaikat-Nya bershalawat atas Nabi. Wahai orang-orang yang beriman,bershalawatlah kalian untuknya dan ucapkanlah salam sejahtera kepadanya." (QS Al-Ahzab: 56). Apa saja yang mendorong orang untuk melakukan sesuatu yang dituntut oleh syara’, berarti hal itu juga dituntut oleh syara’. Berapa banyak manfaat dan anugerah yang diperoleh dengan membacakan salam kepadanya5. Peringatan Maulid Nabi masuk dalam anjuran hadits nabi untuk membuat sesuatu yang baru yang baik dan tidak menyalahi syari ‘at Islam. Perkataan Ratib mempunyai banyak arti, Ratib yang dimaksud disini berasal dari perkataan رَتَّبَ yang artinya mengatur atau menyusun. Ratib adalah sesuatu yang tersusun, teratur dengan rapinya. Ratib Al-Athos terdiri dari dzikir, ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an dan do’a-do’a yang telah disusun oleh Al-Habib Umar bin Abdurrahman Al-Athos yang dibaca juga pada waktu-waktu tertentu seperti Sembahyang sunnah Rawatib yang merupakan diantara sembahyang-sembahyang sunnah yang diamalkan pada waktu yang tertentu oleh Nabi Muhammad SAW.
Istilah Ratib digunakan kebanyakan di negeri Hadhramaut dalam menyebut zikir-zikir yang biasanya pendek dengan bilangan zikir yang sedikit (seperti 3, 7, 10, 11 dan 40 kali), senang diamalkan dan dibaca pada waktu-waktu tertentu yaitu sekali pada waktu pagi dan sekali pada waktu malam. Diantaranya ada Ratib Al-Haddad, Ratib Alaydrus, Ratib Al-Muhdhor, dan lain-lain.
